The Memory Game

Have you ever experienced a time when someone comes up to you, pats you on the back, and says "Hey, Jim (insert your name here) it's so good to see you again!" You cringe because you recognize the face but just can't place the name and you're too embarrased to admit it. So you paste a smile on your face, make some general remark and hope you don't get caught. Perhaps you've arrived at the grocery store only to realize you've forgotten your shopping list at home? Or just when you're ready to relax after a long, hard work day your child announces that they need help memorizing a long, boring list of names for a test at school the following day? If you've ever experienced any of the above you can appreciate how important a strong memory is. The good news is that we are all capable of having such a memory and you will be able to retrieve the information at any time, not just short-term. But best of all it's fun and effortless. In fact, the "Loci System" is so much fun that my kids call it the memory game and can play it for hours!

The "Loci System" will help you remember long lists effortlessly! There are only two simple steps: First choose a location that you are very familiar with. This could be a room in your house, a local park, a shopping mall you frequent often...anywhere is fine as long as you are very familiar the physical surroundings in your mind.

Second, think about what you need to remember from your list and create an outrageously silly visual in your mind using the location you've chosen above.

For example, let's say your list of items include: cell phone, umbrella, tote bag, and your grocery list items are apples, bread, eggs, and milk. We'll assume you've chosen your living room as your location. Here's how to put the "Loci System" to work for you.

Imagine settling onto your comfy couch with two enormous cell phones on either side of you. They're bigger than you are and have faces. In fact, they have their legs kicked up on the coffee table for an evening of good food and movies. Next the door bursts open and in dance several wide open umbrellas saying they hope they're not late for the party! Suddenly a tote bag lowers from the ceiling and keeps going up and down teasingly like a pinata at a kid's party. Immediately loafs of bread loudly burst out of the fridge door, join the masses in the living room and start tossing apples and eggs towards the tote bag in hopes of scoring two points. Unfortunately, they don't have the best aim and your carpet is now a lovely yellow concoction of egg yolk and applesauce! What else to do but begin pouring gallons of milk onto the mess!

Now I'll bet you can easily remember the items on your list are: cell phone, umbrella, tote bag, bread, eggs, apples and milk! Now chances are you might be able to remember that list for a little while without the "Loci System" but you'll probably constantly be repeating the items over and over in your head so as not to forget them and the longer you need to remember it, chances are you'll begin to forget most or all of the items. The "Loci System" will allow you to remember the list whether you need it soon or much later. What makes this work is the silliness of it all. Think of Dr. Seuss's "The Cat in the Hat." Chances are you may be able to remember some of the verse from that beloved children's classic. It's hard to forget because it's so outrageous! The more outrageous the images the better this system will work for you. And it works even better when you are creating the images so why not give it a try? And of course, play the memory game with your child to teach them this wonderful tool as well! They'll love it! Then the next time they come to you after a long, hard day needing your help remembering a tedious list they'll have the ability to do it themselves. Just hope they don't get detention in class the next day when they start giggling during the test.
