Magic Formula For Reading Success
Is there really a 'magic formula' for reading success in a child? Yes! The 'Magic Formula for Reading Success' is available to anyone, rich or poor and it is by far the most effective way to ensure that a child will not only be a successful reader but also a life-long learner! Raising successful readers begins at birth. Research has proven that the simple act of reading to your child from birth on is more effective in learning to read than repetitive reading drills, expensive reading programs, or in-school phonics instruction. It's fun, and-- with libraries available to everyone--free!
But instilling a life-long love of reading and learning in your child involves more than a bedtime story, a kiss goodnight, and lights out! In fact, it's when the story's over that the teachable moments really begin! So what's the magic formua? Read...think...talk...and LISTEN!
To read a book is good but it's like eating the cake without the ice cream. To experience a book is much different! First read it...think about what you've read...and extend it to your child's personal experiences. Dig for deeper meanings. This is how you make a book come alive for a child! It is this very excitement that will get them revved up about books... first being read to and later reading them on their own.
Reading, thinking, talking and listening expands your child's vocabulary, helps them to develop critical thinking skills, AND teaches them the art of conversation. But the benefits go even deeper. Reading and learning from reading builds tolerance and understanding for differences in your child. It allows you a glimpse into your child's insights and views and it strengthens the deep, loving bond between you and your child. So snuggle up to your child/children and read a favorite story. But don't read as quickly as you can to 'get it over with.' How you read and what you read are as important as reading itself.
